June 27, 2025 – In a startling sequence of seismic activity, a total of 15 earthquakes have jolted the Andaman Sea in recent weeks, raising serious concerns among geologists and disaster management experts. The region, which sits atop a volatile tectonic boundary, is under close observation as experts warn of a potential tsunami threat if seismic patterns escalate. (Analysis Rising Tsunami Risk)
According to data from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), Ministry of Earth Sciences, the tremors occurred between June 1 and June 26, 2025, ranging in magnitudes from 3.9 to 5.6 on the Richter scale. Though no major damages or casualties have been reported, the pattern and clustering of quakes are prompting scientists to reassess tsunami preparedness in the Bay of Bengal region.
Expert Insights: What These Earthquakes Mean

Port Blair / Bangkok, June 27, 2025 – A growing series of more than 15 moderate earthquakes in the Andaman Sea has caught the attention of regional geologists and disaster preparedness authorities. The tremors, ranging between 3.9 and 5.6 magnitude, have triggered increased concern over the potential tsunami risk to coastal nations like India and Thailand.
Expert Analysis: Underwater Volcano or Strike-Slip Faults?
In a detailed scientific breakdown posted on June 25, 2025, Prof. Santi Pailoplee, a renowned Thai geologist from the Department of Geology at Chulalongkorn University, shared his interpretation of the unusual seismic cluster on his popular platform Mitrearth.
According to Prof. Santi:
“The epicenter of these clustered quakes is located near a submerged volcanic feature in the Andaman Sea. If these tremors are caused by magma activity pushing against rock layers, they are unlikely to be large in magnitude. However, this could be a geological warning of possible volcanic activity beneath the sea.”
He highlighted the possibility—though not a certainty—of an underwater volcanic eruption triggering localized tsunami waves, especially along the Andaman coasts of Thailand, India’s Nicobar Islands, and Myanmar.
Understanding the Seismic Setting: Not All Quakes Cause Tsunamis
Prof. Santi’s analysis included historical earthquake data and tectonic insight that is vital for the general public and policymakers to understand:
The region is part of a strike-slip fault system—specifically an extension of the Sumatra Fault. Unlike thrust faults that displace large volumes of ocean water, strike-slip faults primarily involve horizontal motion, which rarely generates tsunamis.
Historical records show two major past earthquakes in the region:
Magnitude 7.5 in 1847 & Magnitude 7.9 in 1881
Neither of these events triggered a tsunami, reinforcing the idea that fault type matters as much as magnitude.
However, a cluster of moderate earthquakes in 2005 in a similar location preceded no major event—but experts are cautious not to rule out unusual geological behavior.
Current Earthquake Activity – Key Facts
Attribute | Details |
Number of Earthquakes | 15+ (June 1–26, 2025) |
Magnitude Range | 3.9 – 5.6 |
Depth Range | 10 – 25 km |
Epicenter Region | Central Andaman Sea, near submerged volcanic area |
Seismologist Concern | Possibility of volcanic activity or tectonic stress buildup |
Tsunami Trigger Potential | Low (due to strike-slip motion), but not zero if volcano erupts |
Precautionary Measures Underway
Addressing public concerns, Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has scheduled a tsunami evacuation simulation across six provinces located along the Andaman coastline. The drill will be conducted on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 2:30 PM local time to test the responsiveness of coastal communities.
India’s NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) has also stepped up monitoring and public awareness, particularly in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, where early warning systems are active.

Tsunami Preparedness: What Coastal Communities Must Know
Warning Systems: The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) continues 24/7 monitoring with real-time satellite alerts.
Community Drills: NDMA recommends local authorities in coastal Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andaman & Nicobar conduct periodic tsunami evacuation drills.
Public Awareness: Posters, short films, and school training modules are being circulated to increase tsunami literacy in vulnerable communities.
Historical Reference: 2004 Tsunami Still Haunts the Region
The devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra, killed over 230,000 people across 14 countries. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were among the worst-hit Indian territories. Experts fear that increased activity in the same subduction zone could potentially lead to another disaster if not closely monitored.
Future Outlook
While current quakes are moderate, seismologists advise coastal vigilance, not panic. India’s seismic research agencies and disaster response units remain on alert. Experts reiterate that early preparedness and awareness are key defence’s against tsunami-related catastrophes.
