Darjeeling Hit by Multiple Landslides Due to Continuous Rainfall
Darjeeling, July 18, 2025 — Days of continuous and intense rainfall have led to multiple landslides in the Darjeeling region. Severely affecting life, property, and mobility across the hill district. The popular hill station & tea estates with scenic beauty, has been reeling under the impact of the monsoon-triggered disaster.

Roads Blocked and Villages Isolated in Darjeeling District
Key transport routes, including NH-10 and several arterial roads connecting Darjeeling to Siliguri and Kalimpong, have been blocked due to landslides and mudslides. Several remote villages in the Darjeeling hills have become inaccessible, raising serious concerns over food, water, and medical supply shortages.
The district administration has advised all residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary movement. Emergency rescue and road-clearing operations are being carried out by NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers.
Casualties and Structural Damage Mounting
Preliminary reports indicate that at least four fatalities have occurred in different parts of Darjeeling due to landslides and house collapses. Several residential structures have been either damaged or are at imminent risk of being swept away. Local authorities are working to evacuate at-risk families to temporary shelters.
Environmental Warnings Ignored: Darjeeling’s Fragile Slope Ecosystem at Risk
Environmental experts have long warned of the increasing landslide vulnerability of Darjeeling, citing excessive construction, unplanned urbanization, and deforestation as major risk factors. The steep slopes and saturated soil in the region make it highly prone to landslides during heavy rains.
Climate Change Signals for Himalayas including Darjeeling
With rising monsoon irregularities, flash floods, and slope instability, climate change has become a visible threat to Darjeeling and other Himalayan towns. Environmentalists and planners are urging the government to incorporate eco-sensitive zoning laws, green infrastructure, and early warning systems into regional planning.
