According to Hindu mythology:

Bhagiratha’s Penance: King Bhagiratha performed intense meditation to bring the celestial river Ganga from heaven to earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors.

Descent on Shiva’s Head: To control her fierce descent, Lord Shiva received Ganga on his matted locks, calming her force before letting her flow to earth.

This divine flow is known as Gangavataran, and thus Gangajal carries heavenly significance.

During the sacred month of Shrawan (July–August):

Millions of devotees called Kanwariyas , collect  Gangajal from Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Gangotri or Grahmukteshwar or kankather by walking from their village and use in Lord Shiv puja on Monday at Local Temple of Lord Shiva .

They walk barefoot and covered  hundreds of kilometers distance with Kawads.  Kawad made by bamboo poles and decorated . Holy containers attached with kawad. Shiv Bhakt or Devotee keep the kawad  on their shoulders.

The Gangajal is offered to Shivlings at local temples or famous shrines like Kashi Vishwanath, Badrinath Jyotirlinga, and Kedarnath.
