In a detailed scientific breakdown posted on June 25, 2025, Prof. Santi Pailoplee, a renowned Thai geologist from the Department of Geology at Chulalongkorn University, shared his interpretation of the unusual seismic cluster on his popular platform Mitrearth.

According to Prof. Santi:

“The epicenter of these clustered quakes is located near a submerged volcanic feature in the Andaman Sea. If these tremors are caused by magma activity pushing against rock layers, they are unlikely to be large in magnitude. However, this could be a geological warning of possible volcanic activity beneath the sea.”

He highlighted the possibility—though not a certainty—of an underwater volcanic eruption triggering localized tsunami waves, especially along the Andaman coasts of Thailand, India’s Nicobar Islands, and Myanmar.

Understanding the Seismic Setting: Not All Quakes Cause Tsunamis

Prof. Santi’s analysis included historical earthquake data and tectonic insight that is vital for the general public and policymakers to understand:

The region is part of a strike-slip fault system—specifically an extension of the Sumatra Fault. Unlike thrust faults that displace large volumes of ocean water, strike-slip faults primarily involve horizontal motion, which rarely generates tsunamis.

Historical records show two major past earthquakes in the region:

Magnitude 7.5 in 1847 & Magnitude 7.9 in 1881

Neither of these events triggered a tsunami, reinforcing the idea that fault type matters as much as magnitude.

However, a cluster of moderate earthquakes in 2005 in a similar location preceded no major event—but experts are cautious not to rule out unusual geological behavior.

Addressing public concerns, Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has scheduled a tsunami evacuation simulation across six provinces located along the Andaman coastline.
