As per Hindu mythology, the River is believed to have originated from the divine wish of Lord Shiva. It is said that when Lord Brahma performed a yajna (sacred fire ritual) at Ujjain, the River manifested to sanctify the land. The name “Kshipra” signifies “swift,” symbolizing the river’s quick flow and its divine purpose in purifying the soul.

Significance in Kumbh Mela:

In Every 12 years, Mahakal Nagri Ujjain hosts the “Simhastha Kumbh Mela” in Ujjain  on the banks of the Shipra River.  Attracting millions of devotees for a holy dip believed to cleanse sins and ensure moksha (liberation) as per Hindu mythology .
